Theodore Decker: First step toward concealed-handgun license is cautious one

Hu, look at that, a real reporter… good on him.

I’d been thinking of joining their ranks primarily to educate myself. Journalists are criticized, and rightly so, for a host of gun-related reporting blunders. A magazine is not a clip. Automatic and semiautomatic are not the same thing. We lose credibility with each mistake, and with concealed-carry remaining a subject of lively debate, it seemed a good time to get schooled on the process. I figured I’ll write about the experience as I go.

Bill would lower age for concealed carry permits to 18 | KSL.com

Old enough to be drafted, issued a gun and pointed in the direction to use it? Then you’re old enough to own one.

SALT LAKE CITY — A Davis County lawmaker wants to lower the minimum age to obtain a concealed carry permit from 21 to 18… Rep. Karianne Lisonbee, R-Clearfield, the sponsor of HB198, said she wants younger college students to have the option to carry guns to protect themselves from sexual assaults on campus… “This is the equalizer for those young women who may get attacked,” she said. “They need to have that right.”

Justices reject appeal over Illinois concealed-carry rules

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday let stand an Illinois system of issuing concealed carry permits that gun owners had complained violated their constitutional rights… The court did not explain its decision, saying only that it would not interfere with the decision by the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals backing the state’s requirements for obtaining a concealed-carry license.

Chicago Loses Again, Federal Court Rules In Favor of Gun Ranges

“The city tried to severely limit where shooting ranges could be located, and they failed,” he continued. “The city put up arguments about the potential for gun theft, fire hazards and airborne lead contamination, and they failed. Even the judge’s opinion today noted that the city had ‘produced no evidentiary support for these claims beyond the speculative testimony of three city officials.’ This nonsense has got to stop.

Sensenbrenner ATF Elimination Bill Sounds Good But Misses Point

Note the bill won’t eliminate functions being performed; it will merely transfer them to bureaucrats and agents in a better position to fend off scrutiny. And while more fiscal responsibility is a worthy goal, in the case of enforcing federal gun edicts, that Republican majority established largely through gun owner support ought to be focusing on the constitutionality of infringements.“… ATF has been a horror movie since its inception,” Gun Owners of America’s Larry Pratt told Human Events about an earlier attempt to divvy up the Bureau’s functions. “It needs to be disbanded, not moved to a hiding place behind the FBI skirts – which do not cover very well, anyway.”

KIM Options and Ideas

In the last post, we talked about how to set up and conduct the memory enhancing KIM (Keep In Memory) game. In this post, we will give you some ideas on how to add variety, help increase mental flexibility, improve retention, provide more opportunities to grow their skills.

Increase Difficulty

After the first exercise you can begin to feather in different conditions to help you keep the games challenging:

– Add one item for each new game (up to 20).

– Increase the time between the game and the time the trainees are allowed to write.

For instance, during the second exercise give them a 5-10 minute task or a break before they are expected back in the classroom. The next time it may be 15-30 minutes of some other task/break/combination and eventually, it can be days or weeks between the observation and the writing down of the items in the KIM Game.

OMG “lawmaker drops gun on floor near children at Statehouse hearing”

Rep. Carolyn Halstead, a Republican, said her backpack caught on the gun as she took it off. She said she quickly grabbed the gun and put it into her bag… Witnesses said several children were seated nearby but the hearing carried on with little disturbance.

Not sure what to make of this.

At the bottom, they tie this article in with the fact that the state of Illinois – which is filled with great people, yet is dominated by that shining beacon of purity, prosperity, and peace, otherwise known as “Chicago” – has restrictive gun laws for the places the state conducts its business.

The article seems to be suggesting that the logical solution is to have the same enlightened laws (such as those that have been impressed upon the people in Illinois) foisted upon the people of New Hampture.

Boost Your Observation Skills (#3.a, Observation Exercises)

Observation Exercises

Unlike the two previous drills/games (see the two previous articles on the 4-senses drill and the Xs and Os game) which build situational awareness, observation exercises can help you see target indicators (see the previous article on target indicators) more quickly and will boost your observation and memory skills.

Observing things more quickly and easily will help you engage the decision making process (OODA Loop) at a much earlier time.

Observation exercises can be ran anywhere (your home, backyard, a factory, a warehouse, the office etc.).

Setup can be accomplished by one (if it’s just you and your battle buddy), but goes much faster if you have at least 3 or more.

Everyone should have an opportunity to set up the observation exercise (teaches you how to hide better) and partaking in the exercise (teaches you how to see what is hidden better).

Boost Your Observation Skills (#2, Xs and Os game)

The Xs and Os Game

While you continue to sharpen your senses and observation skills with your 4-senses drill, begin playing situational awareness game that Jeff Cooper called the “Xs and Os game”.

To play the Xs and Os game, keep a running list of all the times someone surprises you or catches you unaware in your daily life, whether at home, driving, the office, at the gym, or walking, hiking, jogging, or running.

Every time someone catches you unaware, mark down an “X,” and every time you detect someone approaching you mark down an “O”. If you keep working the above 4-sesnses drill, before long you will find that your “Xs” quickly outstrip your “Os.”

Your goal in the Xs and Os game is to eliminate all Xs.

Use your 4-senses drill throughout your day, at work, on the road, in conjunction with the Xs and Os game and you will be well on your way to becoming situationally aware.

Louis XIV of France Founded the Nation-State, But How and Why?

The birth of the nation state, and how lucky we are that capitalism has brought us Netflix.

Let’s quickly explore what the series “Versailles” teaches. There was a period in the late Middle Ages when two huge events happened in rough succession. Feudalism – land-owning aristocrats trading shelter and security services for serf-provided food production and other work – was displaced by a new model of consumer choice and mass mobility. At the same time, the personal state was displaced by a new thing called the nation-state. The second point is intriguing. Before Louis XIV, the life of most every s

Weed, guns and catfish: 2017 brings new laws, big changes

Because, you know, those “evil features” like the bullet-buttons that are so popular with hooligans.

On the West Coast, gun owners in California will face new restrictions after Gov. Jerry Brown signed a law banning the purchase of semiautomatic rifles with so-called “evil features…. [that] include pistol grips, flash hiders and bullet-buttons that make it easier to remove and replace (already modified) ammunition magazines. The Los Angeles Times reported an increase in gun purchases in the lead-up to the Jan. 1 implementation.

Grandma Got Run Over by Obama: SSA Finalizes New Gun Rule

Because you know… all the crimes committed by seniors.

For example, the SSA did not attempt to answer most of the legal questions raised about its authority, instead deferring to an overbroad and problematic ATF regulation defining who counts under the federal Gun Control Act as a “mental defective” and to Department of Justice guidance on reporting. The SSA did not explain why, some two decades after the federal background check system came online, it was reversing its earlier determination about its reporting responsibilities and only now asserting a mandate to do so.
